Sodium Methoxide (CAS 124-41-4) is the sodium salt of methanol (sodium methylate), supplied as a white to pale-yellow solid or as a solution in methanol. It is a strong, non-nucleophilic basic reagent and an effective homogeneous catalyst for transesterification and methylation reactions in industrial chemical manufacture and laboratory synthesis.
Application
- Biodiesel catalyst (transesterification)
Homogeneous base catalyst for methanol transesterification of triglycerides to produce methyl esters (biodiesel) under controlled conditions. - Organic synthesis & methylation reagent
Strong base for methylation, condensations, deprotonation and other base-mediated transformations in industrial and laboratory syntheses. - Ester and methyl ester production
Used in manufacture of methyl esters and specialty esters where a strong alkoxide catalyst is required for high conversion. - Chemical intermediate & manufacturing reagent
Intermediate/base for production of fine chemicals, dyes, alkoxides and other sodium-alkoxide derivatives. - Laboratory reagent & QC standard
Small-pack reagent for analytical methods, method development and pilot-scale process trials.
