Product introduction
Propionic anhydride (CAS 123-62-6) is the acid anhydride derived from propionic (propanoic) acid. It is supplied commercially as a clear, colorless to pale-yellow corrosive liquid and is used primarily as an acylating agent and reactive intermediate in organic synthesis, ester manufacture and propionylation processes. Product grades include technical and reagent specifications; purchasers should request a lot-specific Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) prior to qualification.
Applications & Descriptions
-
Acylation / Propionylation Reagent
Used to introduce propionyl (C₂H₅CO–) groups onto alcohols, amines and phenols to form propionate esters, amides and O-/N-propionyl derivatives under controlled anhydrous conditions. -
Ester Manufacture (Industrial Esters)
Employed in the synthesis of methyl, ethyl and specialty propionate esters used as solvents, fragrance precursors and intermediate building blocks. -
Cellulose And Polymer Propionylation
Used to produce propionylated cellulose esters and other modified polymers where propionylation adjusts mechanical, optical and barrier properties. -
Intermediate For Agrochemical & Specialty Chemicals
Serves as a building block or activated acyl donor in the synthesis of herbicide, insecticide and other specialty chemical intermediates (confirm registration/uses per jurisdiction). -
Laboratory Reagent / Process Chemistry
Used as a reagent in R&D and fine-chemical syntheses for selective acylation steps and method development. -
Flavor & Fragrance Intermediate (Non-Finished Use)
Used to prepare propionate esters and acylated precursors that are subsequently transformed into fragrance or aroma ingredients (use of finished fragrance products subject to regulatory rules).
