Potassium borohydride KBH₄ CAS 13762-51-1
Potassium borohydride (KBH₄) is a white crystalline inorganic hydride reagent used as a selective reducing agent in organic synthesis, a hydrogen donor for metal nanoparticle production and as a specialty reagent in pharmaceutical and fine-chemical manufacturing. KBH₄ is moisture-sensitive and reacts with water to release hydrogen; handle under inert, dry conditions and follow established EHS controls.
Applications
-
Selective reducing agent (organic synthesis)
Used for selective reduction of aldehydes, ketones, acid chlorides and other functional groups where an ionic hydride source is required. -
Hydrogen source & nanoparticle preparation
Employed to generate hydrogen in situ and to chemically reduce metal salts to produce metal nanoparticles (e.g., copper, silver). -
Pharmaceutical and fine-chemical intermediate synthesis
Applied in API and intermediate routes that require controlled hydride reactivity and selectivity. -
Specialty inorganic syntheses
Used as a reagent for reduction and preparation of boron-containing intermediates and as a laboratory reductant. -
Analytical reagent and R&D use
Supplied for method development, mechanistic studies and laboratory-scale syntheses where KBH₄’s properties are required.
