N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF, CAS 68-12-2) is a high-polarity, aprotic organic solvent widely used as a reaction medium and processing solvent across polymer, pharmaceutical, agrochemical, dye and electronics industries. DMF is valued for excellent solvency of polar and high-molecular-weight species, miscibility with water and many organics, and predictable performance in condensation, substitution and polymerization processes.
Storage & handling
Storage & handling guidance: Store in original, tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources and strong oxidizers. Protect from prolonged heat and direct sunlight; keep tanks and drums grounded for flammable liquid transfer. Use closed transfer, local exhaust ventilation and appropriate PPE (chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, respirator if exposure limits may be exceeded). Consult lot SDS for temperature-specific storage recommendations and emergency procedures.
Application
- Polymer and fiber manufacture (solvent for spinning & formulation)
Used as a processing solvent in acrylic fiber production, polymer dissolution and coatings formulations. - Pharmaceutical intermediates & active-ingredient synthesis (reaction medium)
Serves as a polar aprotic reaction medium in multi-step syntheses, crystallization and process chemistry for APIs and intermediates (use per regulatory and safety constraints). - Dye, pigment and specialty chemistry (solvent and reaction medium)
Used as a solvent for dye synthesis, formulation and dyeing processes that require strong solvency for polar species. - Electronics and surface cleaning (component of process fluids)
Applied in niche electronic cleaning and processing applications where high solvency and controlled evaporation are needed. - General chemical synthesis and process solvent
Employed across fine-chemical, agrochemical and specialty syntheses as a reliable polar aprotic solvent and reaction medium.
