Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD, CAS 77-73-6) is a bicyclic hydrocarbon produced commercially as the dimer of cyclopentadiene. It is a strategic feedstock and reactive monomer used to produce hydrocarbon resins, unsaturated polyester resins, norbornene derivatives and specialty intermediates for adhesives, coatings, rubber and lubricants. Typical commercial material is supplied as stabilized liquid or low-melting solid depending on grade and temperature history.
Application
- Hydrocarbon resins & tackifier resins
Used as a principal feedstock to produce C5 and DCPD-based hydrocarbon resins that function as tackifiers and performance additives in adhesives, hot-melt adhesives and pressure-sensitive adhesives. - Unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) & coatings
Employed as a comonomer and modifier in UPR formulations to improve hardness, chemical resistance and glass transition characteristics for composites and coatings. - Norbornene & specialty monomer synthesis
Serves as a precursor to norbornene derivatives and other strained bicyclic monomers used in ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and specialty polymer chemistries. - Rubber & elastomer intermediate
Used in production of EPDM/ENB-type elastomer intermediates and specialty curing/functionalization chemistries. - Fuel & lubricant additives / performance chemicals
Used as building blocks for selected additive chemistries, fuel and lube performance modifiers where DCPD-derived structures are required. - Adhesives, inks & coating intermediates
Feedstock for resin tackifiers and specialty binders used in inks, adhesives and coating formulations.
