Cobalt sulfate (CoSO₄) CAS 10124-43-3
Cobalt sulfate is an inorganic cobalt salt commonly encountered as crystalline hydrates (notably the heptahydrate). It is used industrially as a source of cobalt ions for pigment and glaze production, electroplating baths, battery materials, ceramic and glass colorants, and as a feedstock for other cobalt salts and specialty cobalt compounds. Handle as a water-soluble, colored crystalline material and follow standard EHS practices for cobalt compounds.
Applications
- Pigments and ceramic colorants
Cobalt sulfate supplies cobalt ions used to produce blue/green pigments and ceramic/glaze coloration in glass, tiles and artistic ceramics. - Electroplating and surface treatments
Used as a source of cobalt in electroplating baths and surface-finishing processes for specialized coatings and alloy deposits. - Battery and electrode materials
Used in the preparation and processing of cobalt-containing battery materials, cathode precursors and related electrode chemistries. - Chemical intermediate for cobalt salts
Serves as a feedstock for manufacturing other cobalt salts (e.g., cobalt nitrate, cobalt acetate) and specialty cobalt complexes. - Catalysts and specialty chemical synthesis
Employed as a precursor or additive in catalyst formulations and in syntheses requiring a soluble cobalt(II) source. - Laboratory reagent and analytical use
Used in research, analytical chemistry and quality-control labs as a reference cobalt source for titrations, complexation tests and standard preparations.
