Benzyl chloride CAS 100-44-7
Benzyl chloride is a primary benzylic chloride supplied as a colorless to pale yellow liquid. It is used as an alkylating reagent and intermediate in the manufacture of benzyl derivatives, benzyl ethers, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, benzyl esters and specialty solvents. Benzyl chloride is reactive toward nucleophiles and hydrolyzes slowly in water; handle under controlled conditions with appropriate personal protection and engineering controls.
Applications
- Alkylation intermediate
Used as a benzylating agent for O-, N- and S-benzylation in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemical intermediates and fine chemicals. - Benzyl ether / ester synthesis
Employed to prepare benzyl-protected alcohols and benzyl esters in multi-step organic syntheses and protective-group chemistry. - Solvent and extraction medium
Used selectively as an organic solvent in specialty extractions and reaction media where benzylic reactivity is acceptable. - Fragrance and flavor intermediate
Used as a chemical building block in the synthesis of benzyl-containing aroma compounds (use subject to regulatory approval for food/flavor applications). - Analytical reagent and standard
Supplied as a reference standard for GC/HPLC method development and quality control for benzylic chlorides and related chemistries.
