Product introduction
2-Pyrrolidinone (IUPAC: pyrrolidin-2-one; also written 2-pyrrolidone or γ-butyrolactam; CAS 616-45-5) is a five-membered lactam supplied commercially as a clear, colourless to pale-yellow liquid or low-melting crystalline material. It is used industrially as a polar aprotic solvent, formulation co-solvent and as a monomer/intermediate for the manufacture of vinyl pyrrolidone monomers and specialty polymers. Technical and reagent grades are offered with lot Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and SDS; select the grade appropriate to formulation or synthesis control requirements.
Applications & Descriptions
-
Polar Solvent For Formulations
Used as a polar aprotic co-solvent and viscosity modifier in water-borne inks, coatings and specialty cleaning formulations to improve solvency and film formation. -
Monomer / Intermediate For Vinyl Pyrrolidone
Serves as the feedstock for vinylation to produce N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP), a key monomer for polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and related copolymers used in industrial formulations. -
Polymer Intermediate & Additive Precursor
Employed in the synthesis of specialty polymers, oligomers and polymer additives where the pyrrolidone motif imparts polarity and adhesive properties. -
Coating & Ink Additive
Used to enhance wetting, adhesion and pigment dispersion in certain aqueous and solvent-borne ink and coating systems. -
Analytical & Laboratory Reagent
Supplied as a reagent for method development, reference standards and small-scale research where a stable polar lactam is required. -
Chemical Process Solvent
Utilised as a reaction medium for selective transformations in fine-chemical and specialty-chemical syntheses (evaluate solvent stability and downstream removal strategy).
